The Axarquía’s traditional crafts have their origin in the rural communities that settled in the Malaga province during the Moorish period. It is not difficult to find craftsmen in the interior who can work with wood, pita, esparto grass, wrought iron or clay.
In some of the inland towns visitors can still find the older women of the place traditionally working bobbin lace. A traditional art school of painters has been kept up in Vélez-Málaga.
Its exceptional situation has inspired a generation of artists who in some cases have achieved international fame, as in the case of Paco Hernández, Evaristo Guerra and Vicente Hernández.
